Responsibilities
This is a hands-on role spanning manufacturing, laboratory experimentation, and continuous process improvement. You'll build hardware, support testing, and help keep the lab running smoothly.
Manufacturing & assembly
- Manufacture and assemble pneumatic artificial muscles and their components.
- Prepare fibers, elastomer tubes, fittings, and other materials for production and testing.
- Design and build simple jigs, fixtures, and tooling to improve repeatability and efficiency.
- Support prototype assembly and continuous improvement of production processes.
Testing, measurement & lab support
- Support laboratory experiments and mechanical testing.
- Assist the material science team with sample preparation, measurements, and data collection.
- Operate and maintain laboratory and workshop equipment.
- Perform quality inspections and dimensional measurements.
- Document experiments, manufacturing procedures, and test results.
- Help maintain an organized, clean, and safe laboratory environment.
Requirements
We value practical, hands-on ability and a proactive attitude far more than any specific credential. If you like building things and figuring out how they work, we'd like to hear from you.
Required
- Technical education or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience working with mechanical assemblies or laboratory equipment.
- Comfortable using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
- Good manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Ability to read technical drawings and follow documented procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and willingness to work across multiple projects.
- Positive, proactive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
Bonus points
- Experience with 3D printing.
- Basic CAD skills.
- Basic machining experience (drill press, lathe, mill, CNC, laser cutter, etc.).
- Experience with testing equipment and data collection.
- Basic electronics assembly or soldering.
- Familiarity with Python, Excel, or simple data analysis.
- Previous experience in robotics, medical devices, textiles, composites, or manufacturing.
- Experience chatting with AI for technical help.
What You'll Work On
Your work will touch every stage of bringing an artificial muscle from concept to production-ready hardware.
- Artificial muscles for humanoid robots.
- Prototype development.
- Experimental test rigs.
- Material characterization.
- Manufacturing process development.
- New tooling and laboratory equipment.
What We Offer
A rare chance to work at the frontier of soft robotics with real ownership over what you build.
- Cutting-edge technology. Work on frontier soft robotics and artificial-muscle systems.
- Collaborative R&D environment. A highly collaborative team that shares ideas openly.
- Broad exposure. Hands-on across mechanical engineering, materials science, manufacturing, and robotics.
- Real responsibility. Significant hands-on ownership, with opportunities to contribute ideas and improve processes.
